Sept. 19, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Following a season that included the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament and a second round appearance, the University of Memphis women's tennis team begins the season at the Country Club of Little Rock Collegiate Invitational and the Amelia Island 10k this weekend.
The Lady Tigers will send four returning players to Little Rock to take part in an event that is stacked with five nationally-ranked programs from a season ago. Senior Stefanie Mikesz, junior Alyssa Hibberd and sophomores Skylar Kuykendall and Caroline Wegner will represent Memphis in the tournament, and be joined by players from Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Houston.
On Friday, players will play two rounds of doubles and one round of singles before playing one round in both on Saturday. Sunday will include the finals matches of singles and doubles.
In doubles, Kuykendall and Hibberd team up together for their first tournament and will face Allie Robbins and Julia Jones of Ole Miss in the first round. The 37th-ranked duo of Mikesz and Wegner are the third seed in the tournament and received a first round bye. The German pair will play either Texas Tech's Lynn Kiro and Sarah Toti or Arkansas' Kimberley-Ann Surin and Flavia Araujo in the second round.
In the singles "A" Draw, Kuykendall will square off against Ole Miss' No. 39 Caroline Rohde-Moe. Wegner will face off against Oklahoma's Whitney Wofford while Hibberd will play OU's Mia Lancaster in the "B" Draw. Mikesz will compete in the "C" Draw, going up against OU's Morgan Chumney in the first round.
Memphis will also send two to the Amelia Island 10k, which begins Sunday at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. Freshmen Marta Morga and Anki Wind will head to Florida to represent Memphis where they will face a mix of collegiate and professional players.
