Sept. 27, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - For the fourth-straight year, the University of Memphis women's tennis team will be represented in the prestigious Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Redshirt senior Liza Tymchenko and sophomore Skylar Kuykendall will compete in the pre-qualifying singles and doubles draws, which both begin Saturday and run through Sunday. Tymchenko will face Georgia's Lilly Kimbell in the first round of pre-qualifying while Kuykendall will square off against North Texas' Kseniya Bardabush. In doubles, the two will face Tulane's Klara Vyskocilova and Ipek Birol.
"It's always a privilege to have players in the All-American National Championship," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "I know Skylar and Liza are well prepared and will give their best effort. We are looking forward to a fun weekend and hopefully will turn it into a long, fun week."
Kuykendall is 2-1 on the season after starting off with a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Ole Miss' No. 39 Caroline Rohde-Moe at the CCLR Collegiate Invitational last weekend. Kuykendall teamed up with Alyssa Hibberd for the first time in doubles last weekend to post a 1-3 record against stiff competition. Tymchenko will hit the court for the first time this season in both singles and doubles.
Pre-qualifying features a draw of 64 in singles while doubles includes 32 pairs. A total of eight singles players and four doubles teams will advance to the qualifying draw, which takes place Oct. 1-2. To move on to the main draw in singles and doubles, players must win three consecutive matches. The main draw, which begins Oct. 3, will include eight singles players and four doubles teams from the qualifying draw.
Singles semifinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10, in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
