JUCO Standout Joins Women's Tennis for 2011 Spring Season
Nov. 2, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn.--The Memphis women's tennis program will welcome a new addition to the roster for the 2011 spring season, head coach Lee Taylor Walker announced Tuesday. Mariya Slupska will transfer to the U of M from Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas, and join the Lady Tigers starting in January. In her one year at TJC, Slupska won the top doubles flight at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships with partner Brooke Davis, which helped the Apache Ladies capture the 2010 junior college national title. Slupska posted an 11-2 record in dual matches at the No. 1 slot in singles and went 12-3 in doubles during the 2009-2010 season. She finished the year ranked third nationally in singles and first in doubles while earning All-America status. During the 2008-2009 season, Slupska was a member of women's tennis program at Kansas State University. "Mariya has experience at the best junior college in the country and we are all very excited about the immediate impact she will have on our team," Coach Walker said. "When I was an assistant with the men's team, we brought three TJC guys to Memphis--one was an Academic All-American, and the other two were first-team All-C-USA and nationally ranked. I have no doubt Mariya will finish her Memphis career with a lot of the same accolades."
