MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis junior women's tennis player Marjorie Ondeck, a native of Monroe, Ct., won the consolation championship of the top flight at the ULM Invitational in Monroe, La., last weekend.

In the first round of singles play, Ondeck fell to Arkansas State's Jenny Herring, 7-6, 6-4. Herring won a match earlier this season over a U of M opponent, defeating Ashley Murdock, 7-6, 6-3, at the Ole Miss Classic.In the first round of consolation play, Ondeck upended Belisa de Brito of UT Martin, 6-2, 6-1. De Brito was 5-8 in singles play for the Skyhawks in the spring of 2008. In the second round of the consolation flight, Ondeck won, 6-4, 6-4, over Sara Leavy of UT Martin. Leavy was 5-6 for the Skyhawks last spring while spending most of her time at the No. 2 position. The win for Ondeck signified a consolation championship. Ondeck is 4-5 so far this fall for the Tigers.

In other singles action, Robyn Jones, a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., lost her opening match to Louisiana Monroe's Claire Clark, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. In her first match of the consolation bracket, Jones defaulted over UALR's Chantel Coolen. In the championship match of the consolation bracket, Jones fell to UT Martin's Martie Wahl, 6-3, 7-5. Wahl was 7-8 for the Skyhawks last season.

Kristin Chamberlain, a senior for Lee Taylor Walker's squad, went 1-2 in her flight, which was played in a round robin format. In her first match, Chamberlain fell to ULM's Ana Burjaili, 6-2, 6-1. Chamberlain bounced back in her second match, upending Julanne McMeen of Tennessee Martin, 6-0, 6-0, She fell in her final match of the tournament, 6-5, 6-4, to Fanny Lopez of UALR.

In doubles, Chamberlain and Jones, lost both of their matches. In their first match, they were defeated 8-6 by Arkansas State's Menna Kamal and Tina Ojdanic. In their second match, Chamberlain and Jones fell 8-5 to UALR's Sybille de Rochefort and Fanny Lopez.

 

 

The ULM Invitational marked the final fall tournament for the Memphis Lady Tigers. They will return to action at the Samford Invitational on Jan. 23.
