Women's Tennis Releases Challenging Spring Slate
Nov. 12, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team released its 2014 spring schedule Tuesday, which highlights contests against 15 nationally-ranked opponents along with six home matches at The Racquet Club of Memphis.
"Scheduling is one of the most important areas of college coaching. Having a schedule that presents challenging opportunities for the team and individual players on a weekly basis is necessary for growth and development," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "In saying that, I feel our schedule allows us to become fully prepared for the postseason where we look to be very successful."
The Lady Tigers begin the season, Jan. 17-19, at the Miami Spring Invite in Coral Gables, Fla., where they will be joined by host Miami, Vanderbilt and Texas for the three-day event.
A week later, Memphis will participate in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend for the second-straight season, Jan. 24-25, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The ITA event consists of four teams playing at 15 sites for a total of 60 squads competing for a chance to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The 15 teams that record a 2-0 mark at their site will move on to the championships, which take place Feb. 7-10 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Memphis opens up the event against VCU (No. 39) before taking on either host North Carolina (No. 4) or Denver (No. 62).
The Lady Tigers begin the month of February in Norman, Okla., where they will face Iowa on Feb. 1 before playing Oklahoma (No. 35) on Feb. 2. Memphis will then host its first matches at The Racquet Club of Memphis on Feb. 7 when the Lady Tigers take on in-state foes Murray State and Chattanooga.
Memphis then heads to Texas where they will face nationally-ranked programs in TCU (No. 30) and conference foe SMU (No. 51) on Feb. 15 and 17, respectively. The Lady Tigers then travel to SEC powers Vanderbilt (No. 19) on Feb. 21 and Ole Miss (No. 38) on Feb. 23. Memphis closes out the month of February with a home match against Pepperdine (No. 55) on Feb. 25.
Memphis opens up March with a trip to the Big Apple where it will take on Kansas State (No. 54) and host Columbia (No. 57) on Mar. 1 and 2. The Lady Tigers then face VCU for the second time back in Memphis on Mar. 10. Memphis begins a three-match conference swing when it travels to Florida to take on USF (No. 60) and UCF on Mar. 13 and 15. The Lady Tigers then return home Mar. 21 to take on Louisville (No. 72) before making their second trip to Texas with matches against Baylor (No. 20) and North Texas (No. 61) on Mar. 27 and 29.
Memphis closes out its home schedule on Apr. 6 with a contest against Marquette before ending the regular season against longtime foe Tulsa (No. 29) on Apr. 12 in Oklahoma.
"Many of these programs would not schedule us in the past, but it's a testament to our current and former players, and entire staff past and present, and the great job they have done on putting the program in the national realm," Walker said. "Myself and the team are looking forward to a great spring semester."
The American Athletic Conference Championships will take place Apr. 17-20 in Tampa, Fla., where the Lady Tigers will look to capture their first conference title in program history.
The NCAA Tournament begins May 9-11 with the first and second rounds at select campus sites before the final 16 teams head to Athens, Ga., for the NCAA Championships, May 15-20. The individual singles and doubles championships will follow from May 21-27 in Athens.
Memphis begins its 39th season in program history and seventh under Walker. The Lady Tigers achieved unprecedented success in 2013 when the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Memphis pulled off a 4-1 upset over No. 21 Florida State in the first round before falling to No. 9 Alabama, 4-0, to end its season at 18-7 and No. 32 in the country.
