2000: Amaya set a school record in the indoor weight throw
with a toss of 17.17 meters (56-4) at the league championships
where she finished fourth...She won the hammer throw during the outdoor season
at the LSU Alumni Gold meet with a throw of 51.00 meters (167-4)...
She fell just short of duplicating that mark at the outdoor C-USA
championships, where she finished second with a throw of 50.82 meters
(166-9)...Amaya also competed in the discus during the outdoor
season, with her best performance coming at the Big Cat Classic,
where she finished fifth with a distance of 41.07 meters
(134-9)...She finished 15th in the discus at the outdoor championships with a toss of 126-6 ,
her third-best performance of the year.
1998-99: Set a school indoor record in the 20-pound
weight throw with a throw of 53' 4.25"...That throw earned her
third place in the C-USA Indoor Meet...Captured weight throw
titles at the Arkansas State Invite and hammer titles at
Big Cat Classic, Arkansas State Invite and the Memphis Open.
1997-98: Amaya redshirted her freshman season at the U
of M.
Prep: Amaya comes to the University of Memphis after
a standout career at Carbondale H.S. in Carbondale, Ill.
Amaya set a new Carbondale H.S. record in the shot put with a
42' throw. She was a member of the All-South track team for
four years. She was the most valuable thrower for Carbondale
H.S. all four years. She placed sixth and seventh in the
Illinois state track meet in throwing events her junior and
senior years. Amaya didn't spend all of her time on the track,
though. She lettered four years on the volleyball team,
playing both the middle hitter and outside hitter positions.
She was a member of the Illinois All-State team all four years.
Personal: Born on January 5, 1979...Daughter of Elsie
and Douglas Amaya...Majoring in Sociology.
