Jan. 19, 2007
LEXINGTON, Ky. - First year track coach Kevin Robinson took over the Memphis track program in June, vowing to put his squad up against some of the nation's toughest competition, and Friday Robinson's team held their own against some college track's best athletes on day one of the Rod McCravy Memorial. The opening day of competition at the University of Kentucky featured four men's and four women's events and saw the Lady Tigers take home an event title and two top-five finishes. Junior Sivan Aballi captured the meet title in the women's discus with a throw of 156-9, outdistancing her nearest competitor by eight feet. Despite finishing in fifth place against extremely tough competition thrower Gail Lee managed to log a season best 62-6 in the weight throw, breaking her own school record by five inches. Lee will look for an even better finish tomorrow in the shot put where she was an All-American in 2005. Junior Gaylon Muhammad led the way for the Lady Tigers in the triple jump where she posted a personal best 37-0 mark and took home a fifth place finish. Competing in his first ever-collegiate meet, freshman thrower Stefan Nerdal led the men's team in two events. The Norwegian native threw a 166-1 in the discus and recorded a 53-3.75 in the weight throw. The meet will conclude on Saturday following the completion of the running events.
