Memphis,Tenn.- The University of Memphis track and field teams opened competition on Saturday at the Arkansas State University Invitational and enter Sunday’s competition within striking distance in the team standings.

Senior LaShundra Kershaw finished second in the women’s 200m dash to score eight points for the Lady Tigers. Kershaw posted a 25.73 finish time. Freshman Monica Mason turned in a fifth-place finish with a time of 25.88.

Junior Richard Lowe finished third in the men’s 200m dash with a time of 22.53 to score eight points for the Tigers.

The Lady Tigers had two top-10 finishes in the women’s pole vault as freshman Lauren Gale finished seventh and sophomore Brittany Brewster finished 10th. Gale vaulted 3.16m(10-04.25) while Brewster was able to clear 2.86m(9-04.40).

Junior Deneen Kirk holds fourth-place in the women’s pentathlon after four events with 2,634 points. Sophomore Vivian Haynes is within striking distance with 2,401 points.


 

 

In the men’s heptathlon, the Tigers claim the fourth, fifth and sixth positions after day one of the event. Junior Preston Williams is in fourth with 1,943 points followed by junior Darrell Lewis with 1,826 points in fifth-place. Senior Marvin Stewart has 1,651 points for sixth-place.

The men’s distance medley relay team of Edwin Kipkorir, Alex Sweet, Trent Scott and Brieuc Vandeleene finished in 10:19.66. Jasmine Darden, Quaniqua Jones, Louisa Lingley and Kayleigh Brown posted a 12:37.88 to lead the Lady Tigers to a first place finish in the distance medley relay.

After three scored events the Tigers are in third place with 16 points. Arkansas State leads with 22 points followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff with 19 points. The Lady Tigers have scored 26 points and are also in second place entering Sunday’s competition. Arkansas State also leads the women’s standings with 56 points.
