Tigers Claw Through Day Two in Birmingham
The team of Kala Funderburk, Monica Mason, Keyona Neal and Maya Williamson took first place and shattered their own school record in the 4 x 400-meter relay. The group of Tigers turned in a mark of 3:45.40 besting their previous school record of 3:50.74 set in the first meet of the indoor season.
Funderburk and Neal also made strong pushes in two other events. Funderburk took third in the women's 400-meter dash (55.02s), while Neal placed third in the women's 800-meter run (2:15.10). For the men Fabian Feige took third with a solid 1:52.45 in the men's 800-meter. Jaz Davis took fifth with his new personal best 6.84s in the 60-meter dash.
Sophomore Cyarra Wells took first in women's weight throw and set a new personal best of 18.76m (61-06.75). Fellow thrower Britta Jaarats also set a new personal record and tied for fourth with a toss of 16.83m (55-02.75). Tom Willcox and William Hubber finished fourth and sixth respectively in the men's weight throw. Willcox landed at 17.54m (57-06.50), fellow thrower Hubber set a new personal best of 17.42 (57-02.00).
Darius Lynwood took second in the men's high jump with his new personal best of 2.11m (6-11.00). Lynwood's previous best was 2.08m (6-09.75) a mark set at last year's Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
Sabrina Hochreuther tied for fourth in the women's pole vault clearing the bar at 3.70m (12-01.50). Hochreuther's vault was just shy of the program record of 3.75m (Whitney Bolton, 2008).
Memphis track and field next travels to Southeast Missouri State for the Redhawks Invitational on Feb. 24.
