Feb. 21, 2005
Feb. 21, 2005 Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis track and field teams split up Friday night, Feb. 18, and hit the road for their final tune-ups before Conference USA Championships next weekend, Feb. 25-26 in Houston. The women's runners, who took part in the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special in Charleston, Ill., were led by Josetta Brooks who won the 60m hurdles in school-record time, while the field event athletes, who participated in the SEMO Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Mo., saw thrower Gail Lee take home titles in the weight throw and shot put, setting a new school record in the weight. Brooks claimed her victory with a time of 8.84s, exceeding both her personal-best time of 9.10s and the school record of 9.02s, which was previously held by teammate Sheena Ohlig. Ohlig also bested her school record and set a personal best in the event, placing third in a time of 8.88s. Lee posted her best all-around performance of the season with her victories in the shot put and weight throw. Her mark of 60-04.00" (18.39m) in the weight was a season best by nearly three feet and broke Kameilah Amaya's school record for the event, while her toss of 50-03.50" (15.33m) was slightly off her season best, but was still good enough to claim top honors. Annette Uzoh also set a personal best in the weight with her toss of 49-04.50" (15.05m), placing fourth in the event. One additional Lady Tiger took home an event title at SEMO, as Chen Edri claimed the victory in the high jump with a leap of 5-06.00" (1.68m).
At EIU, two Lady Tigers also had strong performances and set personal records in the one-mile as Becca McMahon placed second in a time of 5:11.19 and Mary Claire Dake finished fifth with a time of 5:25.45. The U of M men, who competed only in the field events, added several quality performances at SEMO. J.D. Erickson set a new personal best of 60-07.25" (18.47m) in the weight throw, placing second, and recorded a third-place finish in the shot put with an effort of 54-08.25" (16.67m). Norbert Gulyas also set a personal best in the shot, with his fourth-place toss of 53-07.75" (16.35m). In other action, Janon Busby grabbed the victory in the high jump with a season-best leap of 6-06.00" (1.98m) and Brandon Winbush won the long jump with a season-best effort of 22-08.00" (6.91m). The U of M track and field teams will now have one final week of preparation to hone their skills for the C-USA indoor meet, which will be held Feb. 25-26 at Yeoman Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Houston.
