NEW YORK, N.Y.-The University of Memphis women’s track and field team sits in fourth place with 28.5 overall points at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after day one.
The Tigers opened the scoring tallying 17.5 points in the pole vault. Clara Amat-Fernandez took silver scoring eight points and setting a new program-record at a height of 4.08m (13’4.5”). Amat-Fernandez broke teammate Sabrina Hochreuther’s program-record of 4.04m (13’2.5”) set in 2013.
Hochreuther took bronze scoring 5.5 points tying Houston’s Karly King for third at 3.98m (13’.75”). Carolina Carmichael rounded out Memphis’ pole vault scoring with four more points in a fifth place finish of 3.88m (12’8.75”), a new personal-best.
Cyarra Wells notched five points for the Tigers taking fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 18.63m (61’1.5”). In track events, Memphis’ Julia Merbach, Monica Mason, Jenny Johnston and Martina Rodriguez teamed up for a fifth place finish in the distance medley scoring four points with at time of 11:50.66.
Laura Toldy added two more points in the pentathlon taking seventh with 3,390 points. Toldy took 10th in the 60m (9.17), fourth in the high jump (1.70m, 5’7”), 10th in the shot put (9.23m, 30’3.5”), 11th in the long jump (4.94m, 16’2.5”) and third in the 800m (2:25.81).
In preliminary round action, three Tigers qualified for the 800m finals. Maya Williamson was the top overall qualifier with a time of 2:10.98. Rodriguez qualified fourth overall with a personal-best time of 2:11.67. Johnston qualified seventh in a time of 2:13.27.
