Memphis, Tenn. – The University of Memphis track and field squads made the short trip across the Bluff City to compete at the Rhodes Open hosted by Rhodes College on Saturday. The Tigers and Lady Tigers combined to produce 35 top-10 finishes in the opening meet of the 2010 Outdoor Track and Field season.

Sprinter LaShundra Kershaw finished fourth in the 100m dash for the Lady Tigers with a personal-best time of 11.98 seconds.  Kershaw posted another fourth-place finish in the 200m dash with a personal-best time of 24.71 seconds.  

Sophomore Robert Jackson posted a second place finish in the 110m hurdles for the Tigers. Jackson crossed the finish line with a time of 14.84 seconds and was followed closely by fellow Tiger Preston Williams. Williams, a junior, finished fourth with a time of 15.15 seconds. Senior Marvin Stewart narrowly missed a top-10 performance with an 11th-place finish time of 16.30 seconds.

Junior hurdler Holland Thomas collected a top-five finish with a fifth place finish in the 100m hurdles. Holland finished in 15.13 seconds leading the Lady Tiger finishers in the 100m hurdles. Freshman Quaniqua Jones crossed the line in 15.24 seconds to finish seventh.

In the 400m hurdles, Thomas finished fourth with a time of 1:03.10 to collect her second top-five performance of the day. Jones finished ninth to collect her second top-10 performance of the meet with a time of 1:06.16.

The men’s 400m hurdles had two Tigers finish in the top five. Junior Nick Harold finished third with a time of 53.67 seconds while sophomore Alex Sweet finished fifth with a time of 55.15 seconds.

Junior Richard Lowe crossed the finish line in the 400m dash with a time of 47.90 seconds to finish second. Fellow Junior Frashod Barlow finished eighth in the 200m dash with a personal-best time of 22.45 seconds.

In the women’s high jump, the Lady Tigers had a sixth and a seventh place finish. Sophomore Vivian Haynes finished sixth with a leap of 1.57m (5-01.75). Freshman Kirsten Berding finished seventh with a jump of 1.52m (4-11.75).

The men’s high jumpers also posted two top-10 finishes with Williams finishing eighth and Jerome Leslie finishing 10th. Williams posted a mark of 1.90m (6-02.75) while Leslie also jumped 1.90m (6-02.75). Finishes were awarded via jump off. Leslie’s best finish of the meet came in the triple jump where he finished fourth with a leap of 14.24m (46-08.75).

The women’s pole vault competition saw the Lady Tigers succeed as the freshmen duo of Lauren Gale and Alyssa Northcutt finished second and fifth, respectively, and sophomore Brittany Brewster also finished in the top-10 with an eighth place finish. Gale vaulted 3.34m (10-11.50) while Northcutt posted a mark of 3.19m (10-05.00) for the fifth place finish. Brewster posted a mark of 2.89m (9-05.75) for the eighth place finish.

Northcutt and Berding each collected their second top-10 performance of the meet in the javelin throw. Northcutt finished sixth with a mark of 35.16m (115-04) while Berding finished seventh with a mark of 33.64m (110-04).

In the women’s 800m run, sophomore Keyona Neal finished sixth with a mark of 2:20.13. Freshman Louisa Lingley (2:28.28) and sophomore Jasmine Darden (2:28.95) finished 10th and 11th respectively. Freshman Trent Scott finished eighth in the men’s 800m run with a time of 1:58.84.

Sophomore distance runner Kayleigh Brown finished fourth in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:30.60. In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Brieuc Vandeleene finished fourth with a time of 9:35.18. Jorgen Ekdahl finished ninth in the steeplechase with a time of 9:52.23.

The men’s discus throw had four Tigers finishing in the top-10. Senior Seth Major led the Tiger finishers with a mark of 47.05m (154-04) to finish fourth. Junior Knut Syversen finished fifth with a throw of 45.89m (150-07). Freshmen Tom Wilcox [44.90m (147-04)]and Andrew Miller [42.91m (140-09)] finished seventh and ninth, respectively.

In the hammer, Syversen and Major finished in the top-five once again. Syversen finished fourth with a throw of 54.36m (178-04) and Major finish fifth with a throw of 47.61m (156-02). Wilcox finished seventh with a throw of 47.00m (154-02) in his first outdoor meet as a Tiger.

Seniors Angela Wigley and Karmyn Clarke each finished in the top-10 of the women’s hammer throw. Wigley finished seventh with a throw of 45.68m (149-10) while Clarke finished ninth with a mark of 44.82m (147-00).

The track and field squads will travel to Baton Rouge, La., next weekend for the LSU Relays.
