Memphis, Tenn.-- -
The University of Memphis men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up
their respective home seasons in style, Saturday, at the Tiger Invitational. Both
teams travel to Philadelphia, Penn., to compete in the Penn Relays, a meet
that features over 20,000 athletes, from ages 8-80, next week.
Freshman Keenan Gibson, the C-USA Female Track and Field athlete of the week last week,
continued to dominate the 100 and 200. Gibson set a personal record (pr) in the 100,
winning the event in 11.65 seconds. Gibson also won the women's 200, with a
time of 23.94.
Freshman Autumn Parkey (Germantown, Tenn./Houston) tied the school record in
the women's pole vault when she cleared 10-00 to finish fourth. NIKE's
Kellie Suttle won the event when she cleared 13-5. Suttle finished 11th in the
2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Another freshman swept the men's 100 and 200. Freshman Ivan Williams took advantage
of Larry Crawford and Franck Diadhiou taking a weekend off from competing in the
two sprints. Williams picked up right where the Tiger duo left off, winning
the 100 in 10.67 seconds and the 200 in 21.54. A pair of athletes competing
on both the track and field and football teams, finished second and third when
Von Webb and Anthony Harden crossed the line in 10.85 and 10.89, respectively.
The men's and women's sprinters also captured the 4x100-meter dashes. The women
crossed the line in 46.01, while the men won in 40.71.
There were some exciting finishes in the four-team meet, with sophomore Ryan
Smith edging Rhodes' Bill Harrison by .01 seconds for a second place finish
in the 1500-meter run, while the Ole Miss men's 4x400-meter team, trailing the entire
first 90 percent of the race, caught Memphis' anchorman in the last three
steps of the race to win with a time of 3:11.49 compared to Memphis' 3:11.58.
Memphis won a majority of the field events, with freshman Adam Martin winning the
men's hammer throw, while junior Kameilah Amaya won the women's hammer throw.
Freshman Greg Doughty continues to be an impressive contributor for Memphis in the
javelin, winning with a mark of 55.78 meters (183-00).
Both teams travel to Philadelphia this week to begin competing in the Penn Relays,
beginning Thursday.
