Tiger Freshmen Dominate at Mississippi Open

OXFORD, Miss. - The Memphis track and field squad completed competition at the Mississippi Invitational on Saturday, May 2. The team left the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex with three regional qualifying marks, three individual event champs and five personal records.
In the field events on the women's side, senior Whitney Bolton took third in the pole vault with a height of 3.65m (11-11.75). Freshman Kyosha Yarbrough earned second-place with a personal record long jump mark of 5.93m (19-05.50). Freshman Inger Anne Froysedal won the triple jump with a mark of 12.37m (40-07.00). She took home the event championship for the javelin as well with a throw of 41.31m (135-06).
Senior Sivan Aballi took third in the shot put with a regional qualifying mark of 15.24m (50-00.00), sophomore Marina Vojinovic also earned a qualifying mark with a throw of 14.66m (48-01.25). Junior Karmyn Clark earned her personal record 14.24m (46-08.75) with a fifth-place finish.
The men's field events included Aaron Whetstone's third-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 7.32m (24-00.25) and his second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 14.58m (47-10.00).
In the men's shot put, sophomore Knut Syversen who competed unattached earned third with a throw of 15.93m (52-03.25). Senior Greg Norrid set his season best mark with a fourth-place throw of 15.77m (51-09.00). Junior Harding Zills finished in fifth-place with a mark of 14.83m (48-08.00). He also took second-place in the hammer throw with a mark of 49.22m (161-06) while senior Christian McDonald earned a fourth-place finish with a mark of 60.90m (199-10).
On the track for the Lady Tigers, Tayanna Simpson earned fifth-place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.23 followed closely by teammate Holland Thomas who set a season best mark of 1:03.39. The Lady Tigers' 4x400m relay team took fourth-place with a time of 3:52.39. The team consisted of Vivian Haynes, Deneen Kirk, Eryka Morris and Keyona Neal.
On the track for the men, the performance of the day was by freshman Aaron Evans who earned first place in the 800m run with a personal record and NCAA regional qualifying time of 1:49.35. Sophomore Edwin Kipkorir set a personal record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a third-place time of 9:18.44. In the 110m hurdles, Freshman Robert Jackson earned third-place with a time of 14.63 and sophomore Darius Anderson earned fourth-place with a time of 15.09. Sophomore Richard Lowe ran the 400m dash for the first time this year and recorded his personal record time of 47.83.
The next meet for the Tigers is the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Championships in Tulsa, Okla. on May 14-16.
