Tampa, Fla.-- - The University of Memphis women's track and field team posted its best finish in six years with a seventh-place finish at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, Saturday.

Led by junior Barbara Wine's win in the shot, Memphis scored 57 points, just half a point behind sixth-place Cincinnati. Tulane won its second C-USA title with 145 points. 2000 champion Houston, was second with 135 points.

Wine won the shot with a school record mark of 14.29 meters (46-10.75). The junior from Pampa, Texas, broke the previous best of 45-6.5 set by Sherri Stamper in 1996. Wine also became the first Lady Tiger since Tyranda Mosby won the long jump in 1997 to win a conference championship.

The Memphis freshmen made their expected impact on the team points, as freshman Keenan Gibson finished fourth in the 100 (11.62) and second in the 200 (23.87) to add 16 points to Memphis' team score. Junior Melissa Abraham, also a member of the Lady Tiger basketball team, finished ninth in the final of the 100 in 12.00, while teaming with Gibson to help the 4x100- meter relay team to a second-place finish with a time of 45.78, missing the school record by just .02 of a second.

Another freshman having an outstanding afternoon was Shamieka Johnson. Johnson finished third in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 13.91 seconds. Freshman Lisa-Marie Hyman also added to the scoring column with her seventh-place in the triple jump. Hyman finished with a best jump of 11.62 meters (38-2), despite never competing in the triple jump prior to college.
