TULSA, Okla. - The U of M track and field has completed competition in day two of the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. After the second day of competition, the men's squad currently sits in fifth-place with 20 points while the women's team stands in sixth-place with 21.50 total points. "We really had a great day today," said head coach Kevin Robinson. "We came together as a team and there was so much support for all the athletes around the track. It was just a great day for Memphis track. Some of our strongest events score tomorrow and it could be a huge day for us." The reigning C-USA meet triple jump champion and record holder sophomore Aaron Whetstone added to his already impressive resume by taking home another individual event title by setting a career best mark in the long jump with an NCAA regional qualifying leap of 7.75m (25-05.25) on his first jump of the competition. "Aaron came in to the long jump and blew it away today," said Robinson. "He is the returning champ in the triple jump and he is set to go tomorrow to defend his title." In the field for the men, Junior Harding Zills scored in his second event of the championship while placing eighth in the discus finals with a mark of 42.26m (138-08). "Harding doesn't even throw the discus, but he came out today and earned some points for us and finished in eighth-place in the conference," said Robinson. "That is just amazing." On the women's side, freshman Inger Anne Froysedal earned fourth-place in the high jump with a height of 1.70m (5-07.00) while sophomore Vivian Haynes earned points in sixth-place with a mark of 1.65m (5-05.00. "These girls came out and earned us some very important points in the high jump," said Robinson. "Vivian (Haynes) even set a career best mark." The only final events taking place were the men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase. Sophomore Edwin Kipkorir was the Tigers' long participant who placed fourth with a time of 9:33.50. "I'm proud of Edwin (Kipkorir)," said Robinson. "He still has the 1,500 tomorrow which we expect him to do really well in." The remainder of the events on the track were preliminary events. Final races are scheduled to take place during competition tomorrow. "Everybody will run better in finals," said Robinson. "I expect to bring home a few more individual championships after the day is over."Especially with the men's hurdle races and the 800m run, they could all be massive point scoring events for us tomorrow. I also believe that we could close out the meet with a C-USA championship in the 4x400m relay." For the men, freshman Robert Jackson and sophomore Darius Anderson both qualified for the 110m hurdles finals with times of 14.42 and 14.46 respectively. Freshman Aaron Evans won his heat of the 800m run with a time of 1:54.16 to qualify himself for the finals and sophomore Guy Hudson also earned the right to competition in the 800m run finals with a time of 1:54.34. Sophomore Richard Lowe won his preliminary heat in the 400m hurdles to punch his ticket to the finals tomorrow with a time of 52.87. For the women on the track, junior Tayanna Simpson qualified for the final races in both the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.60 and the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.46. With only three events left after accumulating 2884 points on day one in the women's heptathlon, senior Eryka Morris earned a second-place medal with a point total of 4764 following the long jump, javelin throw and 800m run. Morris earned seventh-place in the long jump with a mark of 5.38m (17-08.00) good for 665 points. She took fifth-place in the javelin throw with a mark of 31.31m (102-09) giving her 501 more points. And finally she added 714 points to her total score by winning the final event, the 800m run in a time of 2:28.36. Sophomore Deneen Kirk earned five points for the Lady Tigers by finishing in fourth-place in the women's heptathlon with a point total of 4581. She grabbed second-place in the long jump with a mark of 5.83m (19-01.50) earning 798 points. She earned 437 more points with a ninth-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 27.91 and with an 800m run time of 2:32.63. She earned sixth-place and 660 points. "I couldn't be more proud of our group today," said Robinson. "Both sides did a great job and we put several people in the finals. You never know what can happen in the final events. Several of our best events are tomorrow and I expect our team to be ready to come out and give their best performances." both sides did a great. The events on the track are set to begin at 5:00 p.m. with each event's men's race followed by the women's race. The races in order for Saturday are the 4x100m relay, 1,500m run, 110m and 100m hurdles, 400m dash, 100m dash, 800m run, 400m hurdles, 200m dash, 5,000m run and the 4x400m relay finishing up at 8:40 p.m. The final awards for the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Championships will begin at 8:55 p.m.
