HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Memphis men’s and women’s track and field teams find themselves in sixth and ninth position, respectively, after three full days of competition at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Each team saw top performers on the day, as Savvas Arestis took home first-place honors in the Men’s Discus with a throw of 56.47 meters. Andew Miller came in sixth in the event with a long-heave of 47.40m, while Elijah Mahaley (45.60m) and Tom Willcox (42.64m) finished ninth and 11th. Miller also finished eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 52.84m, while Wilcox finished 10th.

Robert Jackson and Richard Lowe each placed first in the preliminary round of 110-meter hurdlers and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. The finals of both events take place tomorrow evening. Darius Anderson also secured a spot in the 110-meter hurdles finale with a qualifying time of 14.71s.

Brandon Williams (53.13s) and Nick Harold (52.05s) will also compete in the 400-meter hurdles finals alongside Lowe.

Austin Crenshaw also had a big evening in Friday’s field events, competing in 12 different events and turning in four top-five finishes. His highest finish of the evening (second) came in the men’s discus decathlon throw, where he registered a mark of 37.63m. Crenshaw placed third in the men’s javelin throw decathlon (48.58m), men’s pole vault (4.86m) and men’s shot put decathlon (12.00m). Nate Arnold tied for third with Crenshaw in the men’s pole vault with a top-height of 4.86m.

In Friday night's action, sophomore Andrew Miller earned his third career all-conference bid with a career-best 52.84m (173' 4") toss, finishing eighth in the hammer throw for the Tiger's first point of the 2011 Outdoor Championships.

Cam Baker qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash with a preliminary time of 10.83s. Baker will start in the sixth-position for the Sunday finale. Frashod Barlow (11.02s) and Jaz Dacis (11.03s) each narrowly missed qualifying for the finals. Baker also placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 7.20m.

In the 10,000-meter run, James Maglasang placed 10th with a final time of 32:24.28. With seven events scored, the Memphis men’s team is in sixth position with 25 points. Houston leads with 58 points, while Tulsa is in second with 49.

On the women’s side, Marina Vojinovic and Anna Bischof each turned in tip-five performances in the women’s shot put. Vojinovic (14.90m) finished third, while Bischof (14.59m) finished in fifth position. Britta Jaarats finished eighth in the event with a throw of 13.56m, while Samantha Legleiter (13.34m) and Allison Hotz (13.28m) finished 10th and 11th, respectively. Cyarra Wells (12.40m) finished 14th. Bischoff also had a fifth-place showing in the javelin throw with a mark of 42.08m.

Laura Toldy finished ninth in the women’s heptathlon with a final score of 4,491, while Desiree’ Blow placed 10th with a score of 4,245. Blow (15.44s) and Toldy (16.11s) finished 10th and 11th, respectively in the 100-meter hurdles heptathlon.

Toldy turned in her highest finish of the evening with a third place showing in the women’s high jump heptathlon after posting a mark of 1.63m. Blow finished ninth, jumping as high as 1.45m.

Toldy also finished in a tie for 10th position in the regular women’s high jump with a height of 1.60m. Kristen Berding tied for 10th with Toldy, while Vivian Haynes wound up in a tie for 18th position.

In the women’s high jump heptathlon, Blow (9.86m) and Toldy (8.99m) finished seventh and 10th, respectively. Blow (26.84s) and Toldy (27.63) also finished seventh and 11th in the 200-meter dash heptathlon.

Ellen Kildal narrowly missed qualifying for the 1500-meter run finals with a time of 4:42.98, less than a second behind the needed qualifying time.

Tanyanna Simpson finished fourth in the women’s 110-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 13.64 seconds, qualifying her for a spot in tomorrow’s finals. Simpson also qualified for the 400-meter hurdle finals, placing third in the preliminary round with a mark of 59.99 seconds.

The Memphis women’s team has 15 points with eight events scored and finds itself in ninth position. SMU leads with a total of 60 points, with East Carolina in second at a total of 39.
