May 30, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-Memphis's Carolina Carmichael advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the women's pole vault at the NCAA East Preliminary, on Friday. The sophomore became the first women's pole vaulter to qualify for the national finals in school history.

Needing a top-12 finish to advance, Carmichael tied for third with a new program-record of 4.20m (13'9.25"). During the competition, Carmichael passed on the first two heights of 3.75m (12'3.5") and 3.90m (12'9.5"). On the third progression, Carmichael cleared 4.05m (13'3.5") on her first attempt.

The bar was then raised to 4.15m (13'7.25"). Carmichael missed the first two attempts, but cleared the height on her third try. The event was then halted due to weather, forcing all of the competitors to wait for nearly three hours before they could continue.

Coming out of the weather delay, Carmichael cleared 4.20m (13'9.25") on her first attempt to secure a spot in the national championship. Carmichael broke her own school-record of 4.18m (13'8.5") set at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 16.

Fellow pole vaulter Sabrina Hochreuther placed 24th overall at a height of 3.90m (12'9.5"). Hochreuther passed on the opening height of 3.75m (12'3.5"), then cleared 3.90m (12'9.5") on her first attempt. On the next progression of 4.05m (13'7.25"), Hochreuther missed on all three attempts.

On the track, Maya Williamson placed 14th overall in the women's 400m hurdles with a new program-record of 57.81. Williamson just missed qualifying for her second-straight trip to the NCCA Outdoor Track and Field Championship by two places. Williamson broke her own program-record of 58.07 set during the 2013 season.
