FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Susan King and Steffen Nerdal both had impressive performances at the NCAA Mideast Regionals today, which landed the two throwers a trip to the national championships. This is the second year in a row that Memphis will send two people to nationals.

King won the women's shot put crown tying her career-best mark of 17.60 meters (59-00), which she set last weekend at the Tucson Elite Throwers Classic. She will be making her first appearance in the national championships and has held one of the highest marks in the event all year long.

Nerdal took fourth with a mark of 66.59 meters (218-06) to advance to the national championships. He is making his second-straight appearance in the championships as last year he advanced in the same event and was the first Memphis freshman to make it to the championships.

Freshman Aaron Whetstone fouled all but one jump in the preliminary round of the men's triple as his mark of 15.32 meters (50-03.25) fell just short of making it to the finals.

The 2008 NCAA Track and Field Championships will be held June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa, hosted by Drake University.
