Knoxville, Tenn. - In a late addition to the schedule, the Memphis women's cross country squad traveled to Knoxville last Saturday, Sept. 17, for a dual meet against the University of Tennessee.

Though the Lady Tigers were defeated by UT (40-18) in the two-team meet, the team was able to get another competitive race under their belts leading into the latter portion of the season.

Memphis was originally scheduled to have the weekend off, but made a last-minute decision to get in an extra race and took the trip to Knoxville for the 5K race, which was held at Lambert Acres Golf Club.

On the day, freshman Emily Malinowski (Slingerlands, N.Y.) took home top honors for the U of M, marking the first time in seven races, dating back to the beginning of last season, that Daniele Riendeau (Ottawa, Ontario) had not led the Lady Tigers. Malinowski finished fourth overall with a time of 18:39, while Riendeau was sixth in a time of 18:59.

Mary Claire Dake (Knoxville, Tenn.) who returned to her hometown for the meet, finished third on the team and ninth overall with a time of 20:15.

The team's three New Hampshire natives, freshmen Carolyn Corbett (Concord) and Meghan Shinkwin (Nashua) and junior Becca McMahon (Londonderry), rounded out the scoring for the U of M, finishing with times of 20:41, 21:23 and 21:56, respectively.

Due to the short notice of the meet, Memphis took only six of its normal 12 runners to the meet.

The women's cross country will now prepare for the Harrier Classic, to be held Saturday, Sept. 24, at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The women's 5K race is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. EST.
