Memphis, Tenn.-- - If track and field used RPI and strength of schedule, the University of Memphis would rank high based on their season-opening meet at Arkansas, Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will begin the 2001 season against some prestigious competition on the same track that will host the NCAA Indoor Championships, Feb. 9-10. On the men's side, defending indoor champion Arkansas will host the meet. Other participants include Stanford (2nd at last year's NCAA's), Southern Methodist (3rd), Alabama (tied for 5th), South Carolina (tied for 8th), and Ohio State and Oklahoma (both tied for 19th).

Both teams will begin competition at 5 p.m., Friday, with the women's long jump and weight throw, and the men's 5,000-meter run, high jump and pole vault.

The men's highest seeded competitor is junior Delvit Rogers (Memphis, Tenn./Raleigh Egypt), who is ranked third in the long jump after posting a performance of 8.05 meters last year, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Rogers is seeded behind Alabama's Miguel Pate and Melvin Lister, an Arkansas graduate who won the NCAA indoor long jump championship as a senior last year. Pate finished eighth in last year's indoor long jump championship.

The Lady Tigers will also face competition that finished well at last year's NCAA Championships. Memphis will face South Carolina (2nd last year), Arkansas (3rd), Southern Methodist (10th), Stanford (11th) and Ohio State (16th).

Memphis will continue to look to its women field athletes to get the Lady Tigers off to a solid start. Junior Barbara Wine (Pampa, Texas/Pampa) is seeded 12th in the women's shot put with a season-best effort of 14.17 meters from last season.

This meet will be an especially stiff tough for a young Lady Tigers' roster. The 2001 roster includes nine freshmen and just two seniors.

The meet is being held at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center, a facility that just opened last year.
