Lexington, Ky. - On a snowy day in Lexington, Ky., the University of Memphis track and field team looked to the indoor track facility at Nutter Fieldhouse to improve individual marks in preparation for the Conference USA Indoor Championships on Feb. 26th and 27th.
After a solid day of performances in the field events on Fridays, the Tigers returned to competition with four field events beginning in the morning before competitors took to the track in the afternoon.
Sophomore pole vaulter Karliss Pujats posted a school record for the second-straight week in only his second competition as a Tiger. Pujats finished in a tie for fourth with his vault of 5.05m (16-06.75) and is 15 centimeters away from the NCAA provisional mark of 5.20m (17-00.00). Freshman vaulter Nate Arnold finished seventh with a season-best vault of 4.75m (15-06.25) .
Junior Deneen Kirk jumped 5.86m (19-02.00) in her first leap in the women’s long jump and finished second for the Lady Tigers.
Junior Preston Williams and sophomore Robert Jackson finished seventh and eighth, respectively in the men’s 60m hurdles competition. Williams ran an 8.20 while Jackson finished in 8.31 seconds.
In the women’s 60m dash, junior sprinter LaShundra Kershaw finished eighth with a time of 7.65 seconds.
Freshman distance runner Brieuc Vandeleene ran in the Bill Lee mile and had a personal-best time. Vandaleene finished with a Belgian Junior National Record time of 4:14.11 to finish 15th. In the women’s mile, sophomore Kayleigh Brown finished 15th with a season-best time of 5:05.33.
The Tiger track and field squads will travel to Carbondale, Ill. for the McDonald’s Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois University on Feb. 5th and 6th.
