Memphis, Tenn. - After a one-weekend hiatus the University of Memphis track and field teams will return to action Friday and Saturday, February 4-5, at the McDonald's Invitational in Carbondale, Ill, also the site of their first meet of 2005.

In the two weeks without a competition, the squads have been able to center their attention solely on training, something that had been at a minimum coming off a month-long break for Christmas.

Now under a month away from the Conference USA Championships in Houston, the teams will really begin to focus their efforts toward their end goals of C-USA titles.

After the first full month of competition, two Memphis athletes currently sit atop the C-USA performance rankings for their events. Senior jumper Janon Busby leads to league in the men's triple jump with a mark of 49-6.25 (15.09m), which is almost two feet better than his closest challenger. Junior thrower Gail Lee is the other U of M athlete to have a top ranking, as she is the leader in the women's shot put with a mark of 36-9.75 (16.04). Lee is also among the conference leaders in the weight throw, where she is currently second with a mark of 57-0 (17.37).

Two other Memphis men are challenging the top performers in the conference as well. Senior hurdler Daniel Kiss has the second best time in the 60m hurdles (7.87s), while junior thrower J.D. Erickson ranks second in the weight throw (60-1.25 (18.32m)) and third in the shot put (55-10.25 (17.02m)). These Memphis athletes will look to continue their success in this weekend's meet, while a number of other's hope to improve their marks and move up in the standings.

Competition at the McDonald's Invitational is set to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday at the SIU Student Recreation Center. The first event to be contended will be the women's weight throw, with the men's weight, men's and women's triple jump and men's pole vault to follow. All other events are scheduled for Saturday, with action planned to begin at 8:30 a.m.

Results for the meet will be available on the SIU website, following each day of competition and will also be posted on after the completion of the meet on Saturday.
