LAFAYETTE, La.-University of Memphis track and field squads return to action in their first outdoor meet of the season at the Louisiana Classic hosted by UL-Lafayette on Friday.

"I think it's great for our team to be outside," head track and field coach Kevin Robinson said. "The women's team is highly motivated coming off their second place finish at the indoor conference meet. The men's team has a little bit of a chip on their shoulder, with a little something to prove going into the outdoor season. We just have to keep our focus and keep the motivation level high."

Friday's action kicks-off at 3:00 p.m. (CT) with the women's javelin followed by the men, with the women's 200m followed by the men's 200m beginning at 7:00 p.m. Saturday the meet resumes at 8:00 a.m. beginning with full slated of field events, with running events set to begin at 2:00 p.m. (CT).

Results from the Louisiana Classic will be posted on GoTigersGo.com as they are made available.

Experience Counts
The Tigers return an experienced outdoor squad including 12 of their 14 athletes that competed in the2012 NCAA East Preliminary. The added experience will be key for Memphis during the 2013 outdoor season.

"The goals right now are pretty simple," Robinson said. "We want to stay healthy and we want to start racking up those NCAA preliminary qualifying performances. Hopefully when it's all said and done we'll put 20 athletes on a bus and send them to North Carolina for the NCAA East Preliminary."

Kala Funderburk (400m, 4 x 400m), Maya Williamson (400m hurdles, 4 x 400m), Monica Mason ( 4 x 400m), Keyona Neal (4 x 400m), and Laura Toldy (high jump) return for the women with Fabian Fiege (800m), Tyrell Forde (110m hurdles), Brandon Williams (400m hurdles), Georgio Lynwood (high jump), Austin Crenshaw (pole vault), Will Hubber (hammer throw) and Kyle Bynum (javelin) returning for the men.

Both the men's and women's teams as a whole are junior and sophomore heavy. The men's team sports 12 juniors and 15 sophomores, with the women carrying eight juniors and 12 sophomores. The men have three seniors (Nate Arnold, Ojike Maat, Andrew Miller), while the women have five (Kirsten Berding, Quaniqua Jones, Louis Lingley, Janelle Mason and Keyona Neal).
