LOUISVILLE, Ky.- After a 51-minute rain delay, action resumed on the second day of the 2004 Conference USA Track and Field Championship at Louisville's Cardinal Park. Day two saw Memphis star athletes Gaute Myklebust and Mate Nemeth repeat as champions in the shot put and the 3000m steeplechase respectively as the men scored 27 points and are in 3rd place heading into tomorrow's final day of competition with 31 points, trailing Cincinnati who leads the competition with 34 points.
Myklebust repeated as shot put champion with a heave of 18.09m, eclipsing Cardinal Park record by two centimeters. The Tigers had three throwers place in the shot put as Stein Syverson set a personal best with a throw of 16.76m to place third and freshman Norbert Gulyas placed eighth with a toss of 15.45m. The Tigers scored 17 points in the event continuing their dominance in C-USA. Memphis scored 22 points in the shot put at the 2004 C-USA Indoor Championships. Senior Adam Martin scratched in the shot put missing both of his events this weekend with a back injury.
Nemeth ran a time of 9:14.96 in the 3000m Steeplechase to win his second consecutive crown in the event. Women's freshman runner Kara Cassel placed 12th in the 3000m steeplechase on the women's side with a time of 11:48.41. Teammate Nora Nemere placed 11th with a time of 11:44.34.
Victoria Crawford finished fourth in the heptathlon with a school record performance of 4,849 points, breaking her own record that she set at the 2003 C-USA Outdoor Championships. Three Tigers advanced through the preliminary races to tomorrow's finals. Istvan Kerekjarto and Szilard Toth both qualified for the finals in the 1500m, while Preston Taylor qualified for tomorrow's finals.
Ali Baker ran a 2:17.23 in the 800m but did not qualify for the finals as she ran the 11th best time in the prelims. Tabitha Russell just missed qualifying for the 400m hurdle finals with a time of 1:05.77. Freshman Larry Harris entered the men's 400m hurdles as the fifth seed, but failed to reach tomorrow's finals with a time of 56.15 in the prelims. Ivan Williams, the Tigers top sprinter entering the meet ran a 21.97 in the 200m dash, but did not advance to tomorrow's finals.
The Lady Tigers have scored nine points, all by Crawford who placed fifth in the long jump with a personal best leap of 5.70m. They currently sit in 11th place heading into the final day of competition.
Competition will wrap up tomorrow at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. Myklebust and Nemeth will look to win event titles in the discus and 5000m run respectively, while Toth and Kerekjarto are contenders to win the 1500m. Cassandra Harding and Crawford look to place in the triple jump for the Lady Tigers Saturday. Crawford will compete in the high jump as well.
Houston's Krystal Ward and Cincinnati's Chris Wineberg each winning their second league multi-event crowns. Ward captured the heptathlon with score of 5,173 points, while Wineberg finished with 7,296 in the decathlon. Both won their respective events at the 2002 C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, also contested at Cardinal Park.
In the field events, USF's Dayana Octavien won her third straight Conference USA women's discus title with record throw of 58.44 meters. Her previous championship record toss was 51.11 meters set at last year's meet in Charlotte. Octavien's heave is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
In the women's javelin, Tulane's Jelena Jurlina won with a throw of 45.50 meters, NCAA regional qualifying mark.
Tanika Liburd of Southern Miss won the conference championship in the long jump with a leap of 6.03 meters.
In the updated women's team standings after six events, USF is in first place with 38 points. Next is Houston in second with 35 points. Rounding out the top five is Tulane (34) in third, Cincinnati (31) in fourth and Southern Miss (26) in fifth.
In the current men's team standings after four events, Cincinnati has moved into first place with 32 points, followed by Louisville in second with 27 points. Marquette is third with 23 points followed by Memphis (20.05) in fourth and DePaul (14.50) in fifth.
