Memphis Gets Ready for NCAA Mideast Regionals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's and women's track and field teams will be sending 10 athletes to the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regionals this weekend, hosted by the University of Arkansas. The meet will run from May 30 - May 31. The first event of the day will be the women's hammer at 11 a.m. The Tigers will be competing in the women's hammer, men's shot put, men's javelin, women's discus and 110 meter hurdles on day one. The top five individuals in each event will advance to the national championships. Susan King is scheduled to compete in three events over the weekend. The senior thrower is currently ranked No. 1 in the Mideast region in the shot put with a mark of 18.10 meters. Steffen Nerdal is making his second appearance at the regional meet as he finished fourth in the hammer at last years' regional's to advance to the national championship. Competing in the shot put will be senior Glen Edwards and teammates Knut Syversen and Seth Major. The trio swept the shot put at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Amaechi Oselukwue and Christian McDonald will both be making their second trip to the meet as Oselukwue will take on the 110 hurdles and McDonald will compete in the javelin. Sivan Aballi and Charlotte Abrahamsen will compete in the shot put over the weekend. Aballi will also participate in the discus.
Freshman jumper Aaron Whetstone has the second-best jump in the triple entering the weekend, with a mark of 16.26 meters. |
