June 6, 2012
MEMPHIS, TENN- Sophomore thrower Cyarra Wells was named to the 2011-2012 Conference USA Track and Field All-Academic Team on Wednesday. The sophomore thrower joined 24 student-athletes in receiving the annual honor voted on by the league's sports information directors. "To make this list is a tremendous feat," head track and field coach Kevin Robinson said. "The combination of high athletic achievement and high academic achievement is what this program is trying to accomplish. Cyarra has done a great job so far, and I am confident she will continue to do so in the future." Honorees must hold a minimum 3.2 grade point average and have used one year of eligibility. This latest honor adds to an already impressive list of academic and athletic achievement in just Wells' second year as a Tiger. This season Wells sported a 3.70 GPA majoring in accounting and was named to the C-USA Commissioners Honor Roll for her classroom efforts. At the 2012 C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Wells took gold in the women's weight throw with a toss of 19.33m (63'5"), earning the sophomore First-Team All-C-USA honors. Wells' personal-best weight throw of 19.39m (63'7.5") ranked 37th in NCAA Division I and first in C-USA. Additionally, the Louisville, Ky., native took home C-USA Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors (Feb, 21, 2012), following her first place sweep of the shot put and weight throw at the SEMO Redhawks Invitational. Wells is the daughter of Andre and Antissa Wells. For more information on Memphis track and field and all Tigers-athletics please visit GoTigersGo.com.
