Three Tigers Named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

MEMPHIS, TENN.- University of Memphis track and field athletes Monica Mason, Laura Toldy and Cyarra Wells were named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women's Track and Field All-Academic Team, Wednesday. During the 2012 track and field campaign, the three Tigers excelled in the classroom and in athletic competition.

"I am extremely proud of the achievements of these three young ladies; it shows that the women's team continues to make positive strides in the classroom and on the track," head track and field coach Kevin Robinson said. "We have created a culture of academic and athletic excellence within the program that the athletes have bought into."

Mason carried a cumulative GPA of 3.35 while majoring in accounting. As a member of the women's 4 x 400m relay team, the Washington, D.C., native played a role in breaking both the program's indoor and outdoor school record. Mason and her teammates took bronze and All-Conference honors at the 2012 Conference USA Outdoor Championships with a time of 3:37.57, qualifying them for the NCAA East Preliminary where they broke their own program-record with a time of 3:37.45.

Fellow sophomore Toldy took bronze and All-Conference honors at the 2012 C-USA Outdoor Championships in the women's high jump. Her personal-best leap of leap of 1.76m (5-09.25) propelled the multi-event athlete into her first NCAA East Preliminary appearance. The Kecksemet, Hungary native recorded a 3.26 GAP majoring in marketing management.

Wells took gold and All-Conference honors at the 2012 C-USA Indoor Championships with a weight throw mark of 19.33m (60-05.00). Her personal-best weight throw mark of 19.39m (63-07.50) ranked 37th overall in NCAA Division I indoor competition. The sophomore held a GPA of 3.70 majoring in accounting, and was named to C-USA All-Academic team.

 

 

"My goal is to continue to build on this on a yearly basis," Robinson said. "Many thanks to the athletic academic center, and Dr. Joe Luckey, for the continued academic support that helps make these kinds of accolades possible."

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
