MEMPHIS, Tenn.-- - The University of Memphis and 13 other collegiate cross country teams will open their seasons at the Plough Park Invitational at Shelby Farms, Friday.

Memphis will host schools from a variety of collegiate levels, including cross-town opponents Christian Brothers University and Rhodes College. The women's two-mile race starts at 5 p.m. and the men's four-mile race starts at 5:30 p.m.

Women's Head Coach Stan Hollenbeck has been impressed with some runner's workouts so far this season and expects Friday's meet to show him how the team can run together, an important asset for scoring in the team competition.

"Some of the newcomers are looking really good. Freshman Katy Moore and walk-on Laura Clark (from Collierville High School) have really impressed me in their workouts," Hollenbeck said.

Hollenbeck also gets junior Wendy Ragle back after she missed all of last season with mononucleosis. "We are looking like we're a solid team and that we will be able to run in a tight pack," Hollenbeck said.

But the squad is already fighting the injury bug. Sophomore Julie Wright is questionable for this weekend with an IT Band injury, while last year's No. 1 runner, Lilly Lebron, rolled an ankle in training.

Hollenbeck's other concern with the evening meet will be the heat if the string of high temperatures carries into Friday. With 13 total teams competing, Hollenbeck is concerned that the heat will present some problems.

"Our training staff always does a great job of being prepared for the heat," Hollenbeck said. The Tiger training staff could have their hands full since this is the crucial first meet of the season for all 13 teams.

"These shorter races are important so we can all see where we are. A lot of the athletes are just getting here and we need time to train together," Hollenbeck said.

The Tiger cross country team has not decided whether they will compete or not since their first practice was Monday morning. Head Coach Glenn Hays said the short training time and the heat make it very possible that the Tigers will not run this weekend.
