Cross country Tigers to run Memphis-area race.
Sept. 24, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following an extra week of rest, the men’s and women’s cross country teams will run a very familiar race this weekend, competing in the Memphis Brook’s Twilight Classic, hosted by Christian Brothers University, at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The meet will begin at 8:20 p.m., Saturday night.
Thirty-five teams from all over the country will descend upon Memphis to compete in this meet. Among them will be Conference USA foe UAB and regionally-ranked squads from Arkansas-Little Rock (eighth, men’s South Central Region), Auburn (eighth men’s, 11th women’s South Region) and Eastern Kentucky (ninth men’s, 15th women’s Southeast Region).
Freshman James Maglasang will try for his third top-15 finish in as many races in his collegiate career, and will look to improve upon his career-best 10th-place run at the UALR Invite, which earned him Conference USA Male Runner of the Week honors two weeks ago.
Junior Robert Skinner and senior Guy Hudson, who are competing in cross country for the U of M for the first time this season, along with freshman Darrik Turner earned top-40 finishes at the UALR Invite and will be counted on to supplement the Tiger’s team scores.
Freshman Jenny Johnston was even more impressive at Little Rock, finishing fourth with a personal-best 19:25.22 mark, just over a minute behind the winner. Sophomore Louisa Lingley also finished top-20 with a 16th-place, 20:03.56 mark.
Junior Jasmine Darden (20:37.46) finished 23rd and freshman Meagan Nichols (20:48.34) finished 26th to give the Lady Tigers four top-30 finishes.
The Tigers will stay in the Memphis area for next week’s meet as well, going out to Shelby Farms to compete in the Rhodes Invitational, Oct. 2.
