Volleyball Claims Third-Straight Tiger Invitational Title

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis-UT-Martin Boxscore in PDF Format UT-Martin (0-6) 20 22 23 Memphis (5-1) 30 30 30 Memphis-UALR Boxscore in PDF Format UALR (4-4) 28 34 28 Memphis (6-1) 30 36 30 Memphis swept the competition for the second consecutive day to win the O'Charley's Tiger Invitational for the third straight year. Freshman setter Laura Côté earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honors, while sophomores Shelby Burton and Ashley Liford each were tabbed all-tournament performers. Memphis claimed the championship with tough match against the Trojans. Each game was won by the minimum two-point spread, including a 36-34 win in game two. Côté was solid in the final nailing five kills (.455 attack percentage), handing out 39 assists and digging 10 UALR attacks. Colette Ramirez and Burton had 11 and 10 kills, respectively to lead Memphis on the offensive. Defensively it was Nancy Nellans joined Côté with 10 digs. Burton also chipped in with four total blocks The Tigers opened the day with a convincing 3-0 win over UT-Martin. Liford and Nancy Nellans led the charge with 11 kills apiece. Nellans logged 13 digs, while libero Christen Clayton added 11. Burton was strong on both sides of the net, posting 8 kills and hitting .500 to go along with three total blocks. Côté ran the team smoothly, handing out 41 assists and downing four kills. Memphis hit .306 for the match and held UT-Martin to a .179 clip. UALR went 3-1 to claim the runner-up spot. Alabama A&M finished third, while UT-Martin and UAPB rounded out the field at fourth and fifth-place. The O'Charley's Tiger Invitational Team is as follows:
