Volleyball Wins Memphis Invitational Tournament

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- - The Memphis volleyball team swept both Delaware State (30-16, 30-22, 30-10) and Illinois-Chicago (30-20, 30-27, 30-22) to improve to 4-0 and claim the 2004 Memphis Invitational Tournament for the second consecutive season. Heather Watts (Sandy, Utah) received the tournament's MVP honors, while Melissa Nance (Frankfort, Ind.) was also named to the All-tournament team. "I am pleased that we took all four teams in three games," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "I am excited for Melissa (Nance), who was steady with her serving and attacking all weekend. This tournament was a good test for next week." For the second straight day, Memphis dominated its opponents as the Tigers breezed to a sweep of the Lady Hornets. Freshman Shelby Burton (San Antonio, Texas), who hit a team-high .467, connected on a career-high nine kills and Nance added eight. Watts tallied 41 assists in the win. Sophomore Christen Clayton (Houston, Texas) recorded a match-high 12 digs for the Tiger defense. Memphis continued to make it tough on opposing receivers with 15 service aces in the match. The twinbill, saw UIC battle hard throughout, but Memphis was up to the task as senior Tiara Gilkey (St. Louis, Mo.) and Nance each reached double-digits in kills with 13 and 12, respectively. Watts again had 41 assists. Gilkey also added 13 digs, while Nancy Nellans (South Bend, Ind.) had 11. Alabama A&M went 3-1 in the tournament to finish as the tournament's runner-up. UIC (2-2) finished third. Tennessee State (1-3) finished fourth, while Delaware State (0-4) rounded out the field in fifth.
