Volleyball Picks up Second Sweep of Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The University of Memphis volleyball team (5-1) met a pair of objectives for the weekend in a 3-0 (30-23, 30-14, 30-17) win over Troy State in their second match of the Davidson Wildcat Classic, Saturday. Memphis posted a second-best seven blocks, including 12 block solos, and dug up 57 Troy State attacks en route its fifth win of the season.
"This was easily our best overall performance of the year, " Head Coach Carrie Yerty said. "We improved our serving and served them really tough and then played great defense to back that up."
Memphis aced Troy State 14 times during the match, led by four aces from sophomore Nancy Nellans (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph) and freshman Melissa Nance (Frankfort, Ind./Clinton Prairie). Nellans also led the Tigers with 15 digs, adding seven kills.
"Shella Neba (Aurora, Colo./St. Mary's) was a huge factor in our blocking game today," Yerty said. "She really helped us step it up." Neba led the Tigers with four total blocks, adding four kills in the win.
Junior Tiara Gilkey (Creve Coeur, Mo./Pattonsville) posted her sixth double-digit kill outing of the season with a team-best 14 kills, while senior Brittany Barnett (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) added 10 kills. Barnett posted her third double-double of the season by adding 11 digs in the win. Freshman libero Christen Clayton (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) added 11 digs as well.
Junior setter Heather Watts (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) led the team with 37 assists, adding two service aces and nine digs in the win.
Memphis wraps up the Davidson tournament against the host Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. (EDT), Saturday.
