Watts Leads Volleyball to Tournament Title
Sept. 6, 2003
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Memphis setter Heather Watts registered a tournament-high 60 assists against Davidson in the nightcap of the Wildcat Classic to help lead the Tigers past Davidson, 3-1 (30-20, 26-30, 30-15, 30-17), and earn tournament MVP honors. The Tigers swept Troy State earlier in the day Saturday to finish the tourney 3-0 overall and capture the team title.
Memphis (6-1) cruised in the opening game against Davidson (3-4), tallying 18 kills while hitting .593. However, Davidson jumped out of the gates early in the second game and eventually opened a lead as large as nine at 19-10. The Wildcats held off a late charge by Memphis to survive game two, 30-26. That was the only game Memphis dropped the entire tournament. After a Memphis service error put Davidson up 10-8 in the following game, the Tigers roared back with an 8-0 run on Watts' serve to take control of the contest. The host Wildcats never really challenged Memphis from that point on in the match. The Tigers posted a .414 attack percentage for the match against Davidson.
Memphis' Tiara Gilkey led all players with 20 kills in the match and chipped in with 10 digs. Brittany Barnett had 18 putaways and seven digs for the Tigers as well. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
