Memphis at Toledo Get Acrobat Reader

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Memphis volleyball team took the road for the second straight weekend and the Tigers faced host school the University of Toledo. The Rockets started fast and took the first set 25-16 before the Tigers fired right back with a 25-17 second set victory. However, the momentum didn't last for Memphis as Toledo took the final two sets 25-18 and 25-20 for the 3-1 win.

The Rockets (3-4) quickly opened up an 11-5 lead to force a Memphis timeout in the first set. The Tigers could not get closer than six points the rest of the set as Toledo cruised to the 25-16 win.

In the second set, Memphis (1-7) halted the Rockets' momentum and gained some momentum of their own, forcing a Rocket timeout leading 11-6. Altrese Hawkins gave the Tigers a side out and served three straight points to put Memphis up 16-8 before Toledo took another timeout. Coming out of the break, Marija Jovanovic recorded a kill to put Memphis up 17-8. The Tigers cruised to the 25-17 victory behind a .344 attack percentage and eight Hawkins' kills.

That momentum didn't last long however, as the Rockets scored 10 of the first 14 points of the third set. The Toledo lead grew to as many as eight points in their 25-18 third set win.

The teams traded points early in the fourth set before Memphis went on a quick 3-0 spurt to take a 10-7 lead following a Lauren Hawkins kill. Altrese Hawkins recorded another kill, stretching the lead to 12-8 and forcing a Rocket timeout. Katie Meyer recorded a kill coming out of the timeout, but then the Toledo offense started to heat up. The Rockets finally evened the score at 15 and took a 16-15 lead before the Tigers took a timeout. Toledo took a 19-15 following an 11-3 run, and the outscored the Tigers 6-5 to take the set 25-20.

Altrese Hawkins led the Tigers with a double-double, 20 kills and 13 digs. Jaden Louie passed out 21 assists, and Veronica Zimmerman dished out 16 helpers. Aleksandra Petronijevic recorded a team-high 19 digs. Memphis matched a season-high with nine blocks in the match.

"We continue to have some solid individual performances. What we are looking for and building towards is that cohesive team performance. That is a process and one we are making strides towards every day at practice and in every match," head coach April Jauregui said. "I believe in this team and this group of girls. As coaches we continue to press forward and work in the gym. I know those results will come as long as we keep working towards execution of our offensive and defensive system."

Memphis will get right back at it as the take on Florida Gulf Coast University at 10:00 a.m. eastern time on Saturday. The Tigers will the face Illinois State University at 5:00 p.m. eastern time to conclude play at the Rocket Classic.
