TOLEDO, Ohio - After their morning victory, the University of Memphis volleyball team wrapped up play at the Rocket Classic with a match against Illinois State University. The Redbirds started fast and took the first two sets by the scores of 25-19. The Tigers made things interesting in the third set, but ultimately fell 25-23, and 3-0.

Illinois State (6-4) started the match with four straight points and quickly opened up a 10-4 lead before the Tigers called for a timeout. The Tiger deficit grew to as many as seven points on three occasions before Memphis started to work their way back. Maja Kostic sparked 6-0 Memphis run with a kill. Altrese Hawkins recorded back-to-back kills before Kostic registered another put away to pull Memphis within 15-12. Following a Redbird timeout, Hawkins recorded another kill to make the score 15-14. After Hawkins and Katie Meyer teamed up for a block, the Tigers evened the score at 17 all. However, the Redbirds outscored Memphis 7-2 to take the set 25-19.

Hawkins started the second set with a kill and Lauren Hawkins followed with an ace to put Memphis (2-8) up 2-0. The lead was short lived however as Illinois State went on an 8-1 run, forcing a Memphis timeout with the Tigers trailing 8-3. The Tigers fought back and got within 11-9, but the Redbirds quickly extended their lead back to five with three straight points. Memphis cut the deficit to 19-16, but couldn't get any closer as Illinois State took the set 25-19.

Following a 2-2 tie in the third set, Memphis scored six of the next eight points to take an 8-4 lead. However, the Redbirds came storming back with a 6-0 run to gain at 10-8 advantage. Memphis came back to take a 13-12 lead before the teams began to trade points. Illinois State finally broke the streak with the Tigers leading 21-20. The Redbirds scored four straight points to earn a chance at match point. Altrese Hawkins landed a kill and teamed up with Meyer on a block to hold off two set points. Nevertheless, the Redbirds scored the next point to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Altrese Hawkins led the team with 12 kills. She also recorded her 1,500th career kill, becoming only the fifth player in school history to accomplish that feat. She was also named to the all-tournament team. Jaden Louie posted a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs while Aleksandra Petronijevic posted a team-high 16 digs.

Memphis will be in action again next Friday and Saturday when they host the Tiger Invitational in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers will play at 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Memphis will provide both live stats and video for the tournament.
