@MemphisVolley Finishes up Memphis Invitational with Sweep of Southeastern Louisiana

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis volleyball returned to the court at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse 15 hours after finishing up action in the first day of the Memphis Invitational. The Tigers faced off against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. Memphis would quickly take the first set and follow that with a pair of close wins in the second and third sets to secure the victory. The third set was highlighted by a 6-point run that began with the Tigers down 24-20 to secure the win.

The Tigers and Lions started the first set battling for a lead. The Tigers took the lead at 7-6 and would no look back, stretching the lead to 20-10 and then securing the win at 25-15. Veronica Zimmerman tallied 12 assists in the set and also helped with a block.

The Lions made things closer in the second set, as the Tigers pulled made the lead five points in multiple different occasions, but could not expand on that lead. McKenzie Hayes made her first appearance of the year in the second set, throwing down three kills in just five attempts. The Tigers earned set point at 24-1 with a Lion attack error, but the score would get as close at 24-23 before Zimmerman dropped a quick attack to secure the set.

The third set started with an 8-3 run by the Lions. The Tigers would remain within striking distance were pushed to the brink when a kill by the Lions made the score 24-20. Hayes capped her impressive debut with her 10th kill of the game to make the score 24-21. Sophomore Lindsey Purvis went back to serve for the Tigers, still trailing by three. An attacking error from the Lions pulled the score within two and that was all the room Purvis needed, as she bookended a Viktorija Teivane kill with two service aces, including match point.

Lauren Hawkins finished the game with 10 kills and was named to the Memphis Invitational All-Tournament team. Hayes was the only other Tiger with double-digit kills as the freshman finished with 10 kills and three digs. Zimmerman finished the match with 37 assists, giving her 256 through six games.

The Tigers will return to action when they head to Evansville, Ind. for a tournament hosted by the Purple Aces of the University of Evansville September 13-14.
