Memphis Volleyball Claims Second at Western Kentucky's Lady Topper Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Memphis (2-8) 14 18 15 Western Kentucky (7-3) 25 25 25 The University of Memphis volleyball team was swept by Western Kentucky in the final match of the Lady Topper Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers wrapped up the weekend 2-1 and finished as the tournament runner-up. Carolyn Baker and Becky Shaffer were both named to the Lady Topper Invitational All-Tournament team. Shaffer tied for a match-high with nine digs, while Baker connected for a team-high six kills at a .417 average. Western Kentucky's offense dominated play, hitting a collective .321 for the match. The Lady Toppers hit .419 in ths second set and .333 in the third. They posted a 41-19 advantage in the kills category and a 32-15 lead in assists. In addition, WKU served up 10 aces to help its cause. Memphis got off to a slow start, downing just four kills and hitting -.083 in the opening set. The Tigers hit .308 in the second, but was unable to finish strong and hit .000 in the final set. Memphis hit .083 with 19 kills for the contest. The Tigers will now set their sights on Thursday night's Conference USA opener versus UAB. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
