Volleyball Blanks Hol y Cross, 3-0

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (9-1) overwhelmed Holy Cross (1-6), 3-0, in second round action of the Memphis Invitational, Saturday. Memphis won by game scores of 30-22, 30-22 and 30-18.
Memphis held Holy Cross to a .037 hitting percentage in the first game, while junior Tiara Gilkey hit .429 on seven attacks, while setter Heather Watts was 3-for-3 in attacks. Watts added 12 assists and two service aces in the first game alone, finishing with 37 assists, three service aces and nine digs. Watts hit .625 for the match, adding six kills on eight attacks.
The Tigers got a chance to give everyone their first playing time of the season on the Elma Roane playing court. Gilkey and senior Brittany Barnett each downed 10 kills to lead all players, while Shella Neba added nine kills and three total blocks. Freshman setter Hristina Slancheva spent some time quarterbacking the Tiger offense, downing her first career kill as a Tiger and adding four assists.
Caitlin Agostinacchio led Holy Cross with eight kills, while Michelle Leahy added 17 assists and seven digs. Lauren Liesman also had seven digs for Holy Cross in the loss.
Holy Cross remains in the Fieldhouse for a 4 p.m. (CST) contest against Tennessee Tech (1-5). Memphis will close out the 2003 Memphis Invitational with a 7 p.m. match against Louisiana-Lafayette. The tournament will mark Memphis' last home match until Oct.14th when they host cross-town rival Christian Brothers.
