Volleyball Sweeps Central Arkansas and Murray State to Improve to 11-1

Central Arkansas (6-5) 31 18 18 Memphis (10-1) 33 30 30 Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Bury posted 10 kills and 15 digs to lead Memphis to a sweep of Central Arkansas, and Ashley Liford downed a match-high 18 kills and added 11 digs to guide the Tigers past Murray State, 3-0 in the nightcap. Memphis improves to 11-1 with the pair of wins. The second match of today's double dip pitted a pair of one-loss teams against each other after both teams earned sweeps in their early matches. Memphis emerged as the stronger of the two behind Liford's double-double and 18 kills from Bury. Setter Laura Côté dished out a match-high 49 assists. Christen Clayton led Memphis with 15 digs, while Shelby Burton contributed with six blocks. Bury fell one dig shy of a double-double with nine digs. Memphis raced out to a 30-24 win in game one, but struggled in game two. Trailing 29-27, the Tiger staged a furious comeback and scored the game's final four points to take a 2-0 lead into the break. In Memphis' opening match, Burton led all performers with 14 kills, while Melissa Nance chipped in with 10 kills and a .615 hitting percentage to hold off the upset-minded Sugar Bears. On the defensive side of the net, Burton rejected seven UCA attacks and Clayton made a match-high 15 digs to hold Central Arkansas to a .045 clip for the match. The Tigers got all they wanted from UCA in the opening match, trailing by as much as eight points midway through the frame. Trailing 23-19, Memphis used a 6-0 run late in the set to take a 25-23 cushion. From then on the Tigers were able to hold the advantage until a kill by Bury sealed the win. Memphis then held UCA to hitting percentages of .091, in game two, and -.111 in the final game. The Tigers will match up with Alabama A&M at 2 p.m. tomorrow, followed by a meeting with former C-USA foe, DePaul at 7 p.m.
