Freshman Rachel Theard downed a career-high nine kills against Alabama A&M and Shelby Burton led all players with 12 kills in a 3-0 win over DePaul as Memphis finished the weekend undefeated to win the Memphis Invitational. Sophomore setter Laura Côté was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player, while Sarah Bury and Ashley Liford were tabbed all-tournament performers.

No Tiger hit more than nine kills, but the squad combined to hit .405 in the contest. Memphis hit .321, .444 and .455 in games one through three, respectively. Burton added seven kills and hit .636. Côté had a match-high 29 assists.

The Tigers held a 39-32 advantage in kills, but limited the Bulldogs to a .110 attack percentage and outblocked AAMU 8.0-2.0. Burton and Côté posted three blocks each. Christen Clayton had a match-high 10 digs.

In the tournament finale Memphis dominated former Conference USA foe DePaul, holding the Blue Demons under 15 in two of the three sets. Memphis' defense came up big in what proved to be the tournament's championship-clinching match. Behind six blocks from Burton and 12 digs from Clayton the Tigers held DePaul to a .081 attacking clip for the match, including holding the Blue Demons to -.143 in the opening frame. Memphis recorded 9.0 blocks for the match.

The U of M hit a blistering .462 in the nightcap, led by Burton's 12 kills and 11 kills from Liford. The junior duo hit .500 and .526, respectively. Côté handed out 43 assists. Senior Colette Ramirez chipped in with seven kills an no errors on eight attacks (.875).

Memphis will open C-USA action on Tues., Sept. 19 on the road at UAB. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
