Volleyball Downs NC State, 3-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Memphis volleyball team (12-1) won its ninth straight match, Friday, 3-0, over North Carolina State (5-6), at the Birmingham Southern College Tournament. Memphis won by game scores of 30-22, 30-24 and 30-17.
Memphis had one of its best offensive outings of the season, hitting .304 in the match, while North Carolina State hit .168. Junior Tiara Gilkey (Creve Coeur, Mo./Pattonsville) led the team with 17 kills and hit .414 in the match, adding two service aces and a team-best 11 digs. Sophomore Nancy Nellans (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph's) passed her 500th career kill with a 13-kill effort, adding six digs and one block in the win. Senior Brittany Barnett (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) was again the third Tiger in double-digit kills, moving within six of her 1,000th career kill with 11 kills against the Wolfpack.
Tiger setter Heather Watts closed out the match, serving three of her six service aces on consecutive serves in the third game to close the match in the Tigers' favor. Watts added 52 assists and nine digs in the win. Freshman libero Christen Clayton (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) tied with Gilkey in defensive stats, also digging up 11 Wolfpack attacks.
The Tiger defense posted just one total block, but held the Wolfpack to 30 total kills with no single Wolfpack player tallying double-digit kills. N.C. State outblocked the Tigers 8-1, with Sarah Ensminger posted five total blocks, while Julia Reis led the team with nine kills.
Memphis will face Wofford at 9 a.m., Saturday, and will wrap up the competition against South Alabama at 5 p.m.
