Volleyball Downs Florida Atlantic, 3-1

GREENSBORO, NC - Tiara Gilkey and Nancy Nellans each posted double-doubles, and Memphis hit .309 as a team with 12 services aces to snap Florida Atlantic's six-match win streak in a 3-1 decision in the UNC-Greensboro Tournament opener Friday morning. The Tigers improve to 12-4 with the win. FAU drops to 6-2.
Gilkey led a group of four Tigers with double-digit kill totals, downing a team-high 16. Nellans added 14 kills and seven service aces, while freshman Ashley Liford and Melissa Nance put down 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Nellans was the defensive leader for Memphis, who got off to a sluggish start in a first game loss. The junior outside hitter had a match-high 21 digs. Gilkey had 14 digs and Christen Clayton finished with 11.
Heather Watts set the Tiger offense, that hit over .300 in each of the final three games, with 55 assists. Freshman middle hitter Shleby Burton put up another impressive performance, slamming seven kills and hitting .538 in four games.
