LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Memphis volleyball traveled to Louisville for their first game in the American Athletic Conference Friday evening. The Tigers battled back to take the third set after dropping the first two, but dropped the fourth to give the Cardinals the win 3-1 win. The Tigers fall to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in American play while the Cardinals improve to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in American play.
The Cardinals jumped out early in the first set, using a 6-2 run in the middle of the set to take a 19-12 lead. After two points from the Tigers the Cardinals finished off the set with a 6-2 run.
The second set proved to be a lot closer with nine ties and three lead changes. The Tigers led at 12-11 and tied the game at 12-12 and 15-15 before the Cardinals pulled away. Memphis drew as close as 21-20 but Louisville pulled a 4-1 run to take the set and the 2-0 lead. The loss in the second set is only the second time an opponent as defeated the Tigers in that set.
The Tigers came out in the third set rejuvenated from the break, using a 5-0 run early they took an 8-3 lead and would lead the rest of the set to make the score 2-1.
The fourth set started off close, with the score tied at 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4, but the Cardinals quickly pulled ahead 14-7 and eventually took the set 25-14.
Viktorija Teivane led the Tigers with 10 kills, barely missing a double-double as she finished with nine digs. Lauren Hawkins and Catlin Lilly both had eight kills, while Sydni Etheredge had seven off the bench. Alexis Wesley had a game-high six blocks while adding three kills and a dig to the stat sheet. Veronica Zimmerman missed a double-double by two digs as the redshirt sophomore had 33 assists and eight digs to go along with two kills and a block.
The Tigers continue conference play and remain on the road Sunday as they travel to take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati at 1 p.m. eastern time at the Fifth Third Arena.
