Philadelphia - The Memphis volleyball team traveled to take on the Temple Owls Friday evening. The match was the first ever meeting between the programs, with the Owls earning the straight set win (25-20, 25-20, 25-21).

The first set started off close, but the Owls went on an early 8-2 run to take a 14-7 lead. While the Tigers kept the set close, they could not pull within striking distance. The Owls jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the second set and used that breathing room to earn another 25-20 set win. The third set proved to be closer, with nine ties, with the final being 11-11. The Tigers made a late push, pulling within two at 21-19, but the Owls were able to hold them off for the 25-21 win for the set and the match.

"Hats off to Temple for playing a solid match," said head coach April Jauregui. "They are a very good defensive team and they demand that you are aggressive to score. We know this league will be a battle every night. We have the ability to do some great things but we must continue to execute. Temple has built an amazing home court atmosphere and that is exactly what we want to have next weekend. We will get back in the gym and push to get ready for our opening weekend."

Sophomore Veronica Zimmerman continued her impressive year, finishing the match with 33 assists and 12 digs. The double-double is the setter's seventh of the season, tying her for team-best with senior Viktorija Teivane. Freshman standout Catlin Lilly had a game-high 12 kills, followed by Lauren Hawkins with 10. Aleksandra Petronijevic led the Tigers with 20 digs. Teivane missed her eighth double-double, finishing with seven kills and 10 digs.

The Tigers return to Memphis next weekend for two games. They will face the SMU Mustangs Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse and then the Houston Cougars Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. All Memphis home volleyball matches feature free admission.
