Tiger Volleyball Cruises to Sweep of UAB

UAB (10-3; 1-2 C-USA) 22 22 24 Memphis (11-7; 3-0 C-USA) 30 30 30 The University of Memphis volleyball team improved to 3-0 in Conference USA play with a dominating sweep over UAB this evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Senior Nancy Nellans led all players with 13 kills, while Ashley Liford downed 11 and hit .400 for the Tigers, who played their first home match in 34 days. Memphis' defense was solid, holding UAB to just a .173 attack percentage in the match, including a .061 clip in game one which Memphis won 30-22. In addition, the Tigers posted 10 total blocks behind Shelby Burton and Fehi Tuivai, who both block four UAB attacks each. Burton finished with eight kills after hammering six in the final frame. Nellans paced Memphis with nine digs and defensive specialist Kristen Hardee had seven. The U of M hit .278 for the contest, but posted a .345 and .310 average in the final two sets. Freshman Laura Côté dished out 38 assists. Memphis and UAB will meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
