Mustangs Spoil Tiger Conference Home Opener, 3-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger volleyball team (9-8, 1-3 American) hosted the SMU Mustangs (12-6, 4-1 American) home opener Friday evening at the Elma Fieldhouse. The Tigers returned to the Fieldhouse for their conference opener after spending the first two weeks of conference play the road. The Mustangs came out on top of an intense 3-1 (25-13, 26-24, 25-11, 25-17) final score.
The Mustangs utilized an early 7-0 run to take a 14-7 lead in the first set. A 5-0 run later in the set by SMU helped the Mustangs take the set 25-13.
The teams returned from the locker rooms for the third set. The teams remained close early, but the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run starting at 15-9 to reach set point at 24-9. Back-to-back kills from Catlin Lilly and Lauren Hawkins pushed the score to 24-11, but a Mustang block finished the set 25-11.
The fourth set started close, with 3 early ties, but then the Mustangs jumped out to a 13-6. Lilly helped lead the Tiger comeback effort, downing six kills in the set, but the Mustangs were able to hold off the Memphis attack and take the set 25-17 and the set 3-1.
Lilly led the Tigers with 15 kills, hitting an impressive .333 percentage. Hawkins was the only other Tiger to reach the double-digit mark, finishing with 11. Veronica Zimmerman finished with 34 assits and seven digs, coming just short of her eighth double-double of the season.
The Tigers return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse when they continue American Athletic Conference play against the Houston Cougars.
