@Memphisvolley Drops 5-Set Heartbreak to Houston Cougars, 3-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis volleyball team (9-9, 1-4) continued conference place Sunday afternoon when they hosted the University of Houston Cougars at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Game stretched to 5-sets as the teams battled for a lead throughout the afternoon. Eventually the Cougars were able to take the fifth set and the win 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 9-25, 16-14).
The first set was extremely close, with the score getting tied-up 12 times before the Cougars scored the final two points to take the set 25-23. The second set proved to be just as close, with another 12 ties, but this time the Tigers came out on top of the 25-23 score.
Coming out of halftime the Tigers scored first in the third set, but the Cougars would take the lead at8-7 and not give it up. Houston stretched their lead to 23-16 and held off a late push from Memphis to take the set 25-20.
The Tigers dominated the fourth set, never trailing as they cruised to a 25-9 score. The Tigers had runs of 6-2 and 9-0 to force the fifth set.
Memphis jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Houston would tie the score at 6-6 and again at 10-10. The Tigers reached match point at 14-11, but the Cougars battled back to take the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Catlin Lilly led the Tiger attack, downing 17 kills, while racking up 10 digs and earning her seventh double-double of the season. Alexis Wesley and Lauren Hawkins added 11 kills and five blocks apiece, while McKenzie Hayes added seven kills.
Michaella Moss earned her first career double-double with 37 assists and 14 digs. The freshman was making her first collegiate start at setter, having played hitter before Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. when they host Tennessee State for a non-conference match.
