Memphis Drops 5-Set Battle Against Visiting Tennessee State, 3-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis volleyball team (9-10) took a break from American Athletic Conference play Tuesday evening as they welcomed Tennessee State University (6-11) to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Memphis led early, but eventually dropped the 5-set battle to TSU, 21-25, 22-25, 27-25, 26-24, 15-12.  

Memphis took the first set 25-21 and followed that by taking the second set 25-22. TSU battled back taking the third and fourth sets in overtime, 27-25 and 26-24. The fifth set saw five ties, but TSU took the lead at 10-9 and kept the lead from that point on, taking the set 15-12.  

The Tigers offense was led by freshman Michaella Moss and junior Lauren Hawkins. Moss downed 14 kills and racked up 27 digs, while Hawkins totaled a team-high 18 kills and nine blocks. Moss has not had a double-double in back-to-back games. Alexis Wesley finished with nine kills and seven blocks, including three of the solo variety.

Sophomore Veronica Zimmerman tallied 46 assists and 14, giving her a team-best eighth double-double. Redshirt sophomore Lindsey Purvis had 20 digs, her most as a Tiger.



The Tigers return to action Friday evening when they welcome American Athletic Conference foe Rutgers to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. They'll complete their five-game homestand Sunday when Uconn comes to the Fieldhouse. Sunday will be the annual Dig Pink Event, with the game starting at 1 p.m.
