MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis volleyball team (10-10, 2-4 American) took on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-16, 0-6 American) Friday evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers jumped to an early 2-set lead and eventually brought home the 3-1 win (27-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19).
The Tigers jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first set, but the Scarlet Knights counted, tying the score at 19-19 and even pulling ahead 20-19. The Tigers rallied and took the set 27-25.
Memphis jumped out to another big lead in the second set, starting with an 11-4 run. They would lead for the duration of the second set, winning 25-18. The Scarlett Knights battled back to take the third set by a close margin of 25-23.
Rutgers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set, only to see Memphis tie it up at 9-9. Rutgers pulled ahead 12-9, Memphis eventually pulled ahead 17-16 and a McKenzie Hayes kill finished the set and the match in favor of the Tigers.
Hayes finished the match with an economical 11 kills on 26 swings, giving her a .346 hitting percentage. Lauren Hawkins finished with a team-best 14 kills while adding four blocks. Veronica Zimmerman finished with 39 assists and 15 digs, giving her a team-best nine double-doubles on the season. Aleksandra Petronijevic had a game-best 25 digs, while adding four assists. Lindsey Purvis and Michaella Moss continued their strong play as of late, digging out 11 and 15 balls respectively.
The Tigers return to the court Sunday afternoon, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. when the UConn Huskies come to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse for the annual Dig Pink Match.
